How Double-Glazed Windows Will Help Keep Your Home Safe From Intruders

Double glazing is one of the best methods of insulating your home, making it more energy-efficient and lowering your heating and air conditioning bills. What you may not realise is that they can also add to your home security. Here are some of the reasons why double-glazed windows can protect your home from intruders.

Tougher glass

Firstly, double-glazed windows are likely to be made from tougher glass than an ordinary window and are not as easy to smash. This is something you can enhance by covering the window with special security film that makes the window even harder to break.

Air gap

Secondly, the air gap between the two panes of glass will make the glass harder to break. As the air acts as a shock absorber, the energy used against the window will dissipate and will not be enough for the glass to shatter. An intruder could find themselves banging on the windows in vain, causing a disturbance but not gaining entry.

Noise

Thirdly, breaking through a double-glazed will make a lot more noise than an ordinary window. Burglars do not want to be heard as they smash the glass, and double-glazed windows will be noisier by their very nature. Even if the burglars succeed in breaking the outside window, they will find themselves faced by a second window that will also need to be broken. Any noise increases the risk of detection and either getting caught or having to abandon the burglary, so intruders are much less likely to try to get through a double-glazed window that could attract unwanted attention.

Frame

Finally, the way the windows are installed makes it more difficult for a burglar to prise them out of the frame. A normal window fixed in with putty is easy for an intruder to remove whole and gain entry without making noise or breaking glass at all. Double-glazed windows, on the other hand, will have a PVC frame that is impossible to break through. The windows will also have been fitted from the inside of the house and will have the beading on the inside so that a burglar cannot simply remove the beading to get through.

Double-glazed windows cannot secure your house on their own. However, they will form a valuable part of your overall home security and be a huge contribution to your peace of mind. For more information about double-glazed windows, contact a supplier.
